Small fixes can lead to big savings and prevent major issues down the line. While we’re always here to help, here are some helpful tips that you can take to diagnose problems or even stop them before they start.

If you suspect your pool is losing more water than normal evaporation, the Bucket Test is a simple way to find out. Here’s how to do it:

1

Take a bucket (a 5-gallon one works best) and fill it with pool water until it’s about three-quarters full.

2

Set the bucket on the top step of your pool so that it’s partially submerged but not floating away.

3

Use a waterproof marker or tape to mark the water level inside the bucket. Then, mark the pool’s water level on the outside of the bucket.

4

Leave the bucket in place for a full day. Make sure no one swims during the test and turn off any automatic refilling systems.

5

After 24 hours, check both water levels. If the pool water level has dropped more than the water inside the bucket, your pool is likely leaking.

6

If the test indicates a leak, it’s important to address it promptly to prevent further damage. *

(but not your pipes)

The average household leak can waste nearly 10,000 gallons of water a year—enough to fill a backyard swimming pool!

A faucet dripping just once per second can waste over 3,000 gallons of water annually. That’s like 180 showers going down the drain!

Nationwide, household leaks waste nearly 1 trillion gallons of water annually—enough to supply water to 11 million homes for a year.
